Blackjack guide

What does a blackjack pay at 3 to 2 and at 6 to 5?

At 3 to 2 a blackjack pays $3 for every $2 bet, so $10 pays $15. At 6 to 5 it pays $6 for every $5 bet, so the same $10 pays $12.

What counts as a blackjack

Only an ace and a ten-value card as the first two cards. A 21 made after a split, or with three or more cards, is just 21 and pays 1 to 1.

Working it out

For 3 to 2, halve the bet and add it to the bet again: half of $10 is $5, so $15. For 6 to 5, divide the bet by 5 and multiply by 6: $10 divided by 5 is $2, so $12. A 6 to 5 payout is clean on bets in multiples of $5.

Odd bets

A $15 blackjack at 3 to 2 pays $22.50, which takes a 50-cent piece. A casino without one rounds the pay. A $12 bet at 6 to 5 comes to $14.40, which no coin makes, so it always rounds.

House rules vary

  • Rounding odd bets. We default to the exact pay with a 50-cent piece, so $15 pays $22.50. A casino with no half-dollar pieces rounds the pay to a whole dollar. Our California cardroom profile rounds down: $22.
  • Which pay the table offers. Some tables offer 6 to 5. The sign on the table says which pay it is.
  • When it’s paid. In our default, a natural is paid on the deal once the peek shows no dealer blackjack.
