Craps guide

How do craps dealers handle come bets, odds working or off, and stick calls?

A come bet in the come box wins even money on a 7 or 11, loses on a 2, 3 or 12, and travels to the number on any point number. Once it sits on a number the flat bet wins even money when that number rolls and loses to a 7, and its odds pay true odds but are off on a come-out roll unless the player calls them working.

Where a come bet goes

A come bet is a pass line bet made after the point is set. It sits in the come box until the next roll. A 7 or 11 wins it, a 2, 3 or 12 takes it, and a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 moves it to that number. The base dealer does this in the move step of take, pay, move, pay.

Once it is on a number, only that number and a 7 matter to it. The number wins it even money, and a 7 takes it. Odds on top of it pay true odds: 6 to 5 on the 6 and 8, 3 to 2 on the 5 and 9, 2 to 1 on the 4 and 10.

The come-out 7

The flat bet on a number is always working. The odds on it are not: on the come-out they are off unless the player calls them working. A player has $10 on the 6 with $20 odds, and a 7 rolls on the come-out. Take the $10 flat bet and give the $20 odds back. They are returned, not lost.

If the player called the odds working, the 7 takes them with the flat bet. A come-out 6 with the odds off pays the $10 flat bet and gives the odds back with nothing won on them.

How the stick calls a roll

The stick calls every roll, loud and clear. On a roll that wins the line, call “Winner” first, then the number: “Winner, yo-leven”, or “Winner, six, the hard way” when the point is made the hard way. On a seven out, call “Seven out, line away”.

Otherwise call the number: “Aces, craps”, “Ace-deuce, craps”, “Twelve, craps”, “Seven”, “Eight, easy”, “Eight, the hard way”. Call “Down behind” only if there are bets down behind that number.

What the stick does and doesn’t do

The stick never pays a player. Tell the base dealer what to pay and point to it with the stick.

The stick books the center bets out loud: the amount, the bet and the position. No late bets once the dice are out, not even from the shooter.

House rules vary

  • Come odds on the come-out. We default to off, returned on a come-out 7. A casino may leave them working unless the player calls them off.
  • “Winner” first. We call “Winner” and then the number. A casino may call the number first, then “winner”.
  • The seven-out call. We use “Seven out, line away”. A casino may have its own words.
