How do you pay a horn bet and a horn high bet?
A horn bet is four equal units, one each on 2, 3, 11 and 12. When one wins you pay it at its odds, 30 to 1 on the 2 and 12 and 15 to 1 on the 3 and 11, then take out the three units that lost; a horn high adds an extra unit on one of the four numbers, five units in all.

Each unit is $1. The roll is a 2. The $1 on the 2 pays 30 to 1, which is $30. The other three units, $1 each, lose. $30 minus $3 is $27. On a 3 the win is $15, minus $3, so $12.
A 7 takes the whole bet. Any other roll leaves it alone.
The bet size
A horn is made in multiples of $4 so every unit is a whole dollar. A horn high is made in multiples of $5: four numbers, with one of them getting two units.
Working out a horn high
Take a $10 horn high 12. Each unit is $2, so the 12 carries $4 and the others $2 each. A 12 wins $4 at 30 to 1, $120, minus the three $2 losses, $6: $114. A 2 wins $2 at 30 to 1, $60, minus the $4 on the 12 and the $2 each on the 3 and 11, $8: $52. A 3 or 11 wins $2 at 15 to 1, $30, minus $8: $22.
The shortcut
Count in units. A 2 or 12 on a plain horn pays 30 units minus 3, so 27 units, and a 3 or 11 pays 15 minus 3, so 12 units. Multiply by the unit size. A $12 horn has $3 units: 27 × $3 is $81, 12 × $3 is $36.
House rules vary
- “To” and “for”. A layout that says 30 for 1 means 29 to 1. The numbers here are “to”: the win, not including the bet.
- Rounding. A dice rack carries no coin, so a pay that isn’t a whole dollar is rounded down.
