What does a place bet pay in craps?
A place bet on the 6 or 8 pays 7 to 6, on the 5 or 9 pays 7 to 5, and on the 4 or 10 pays 9 to 5. Dealers want the bet in $6 units on the 6 and 8, and in $5 units on the 4, 5, 9 and 10, because then it pays in whole dollars.

Seven to six means $7 for every $6 bet. Put $6 on the 6 and it pays $7. Put $12 on it and it pays $14. A $10 bet on the 6 doesn’t divide into sixes, so part of it is paid at a different rate.
Seven to five on the 5 and 9 works the same way: every $5 pays $7. Nine to five on the 4 and 10: every $5 pays $9.
A bet that isn’t in whole units
Say a player places $10 on the 6. One full $6 unit pays $7. The other $4 is paid even money, $4. The bet pays $11. A $12 bet on the 4 is two $5 units, which pay $18, plus $2 left over at even money: $20 in all.
Place bets against true odds
True odds on the 6 and 8 are 6 to 5, on the 5 and 9 are 3 to 2, and on the 4 and 10 are 2 to 1. Place bets pay a little less than that, which is why they pay 7 to 6, 7 to 5 and 9 to 5.
On the come-out roll
Place bets don’t work on the come-out roll unless the player calls them on. If the shooter sevens out, they lose like any other bet on the layout.
House rules vary
- Short bets. Some casinos pay the units at the place odds and the rest even money, as above. Others only take whole units. Ask your floor.
- Coin. A dice rack carries no coin, so a pay that isn’t a whole dollar is rounded down. A casino with half-dollar pieces may pay them.
- Come-out. A casino may leave place bets working on the come-out. Ours default to off.
